What does paipan (排盘) actually mean?

Paipan (排盘) literally means “laying out the chart”: converting your exact birth moment into the Four Pillars — year, month, day, and hour, each written as a Heavenly Stem plus Earthly Branch pair. The conversion is calendar astronomy, not guesswork: solar terms (节气) set the month boundaries, and the optional true solar time correction adjusts your birth hour to your birth city's longitude. The same clock time can produce a different bazi paipan in different cities — which is why a precise paipan calculator asks for your birth city when true solar time correction is on. New to BaZi? How to read your bazi paipan in 3 steps

1) Find your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar, the reference point everything else is read against. 2) Scan the Ten Gods — the role each other stem plays relative to your Day Master; the Ten Gods personality map shows what each role tends to mean. 3) Check the branch interactions — clashes and combinations among your four Earthly Branches (the Earthly Branches guide covers these). The free Personality Snapshot walks all three for you automatically; the chart is a thinking lens, not a verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't know my exact birth time?
GuanWei BaZi reads best with the hour. If you don't know your hour, use 12:00 noon as a proxy — your year, month, and day pillars stay accurate, so your Day Master and Spouse Palace (both from the day pillar) are unaffected. What becomes approximate is the hour pillar itself and any detail it specifically anchors.
What's the most important thing on my chart?
Your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem in your day pillar. It represents "you" in the chart and anchors all Ten Gods relationships shown elsewhere on your reading.
How do I read the Five Elements in my chart?
Each of your Four Pillars is color-coded by its element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) — see which elements appear and your Day Master's element at a glance. A deeper read of elemental strength and the element that best balances your chart (your Favorable Element) is part of the full paid analysis.
Where do the 10-year decade pillars come from?
GuanWei BaZi calculates them from your month pillar plus gender. Each decade is a "weather backdrop" your natal chart meets — the same person in different decades meets different opportunities.
What's included in the free Personality Snapshot?
At no cost, no signup — your Day Master and core traits, your Ten Gods and Hidden Stems, your Four Pillars' Five Elements (color-coded), a quick pattern read, your next Luck Pillar shift, and Spouse Palace highlights. The deeper analysis — including Five Elements strength assessment and Favorable Element (用神) timing — is the paid layer.
Does this calculator use true solar time?
Yes — optionally. Choose your birth city and we correct to local solar time (longitude offset + equation of time). It's off by default to keep hour entry simple.
