Heavenly Stems vs. Earthly Branches in BaZi: Which Is Stronger?

A common BaZi question is whether the Heavenly Stems (天干) or the Earthly Branches (地支) carry more strength. The short answer is that the branches usually matter more because they provide the roots that support what appears in the stems.

Why Roots Matter More Than Appearances

A Heavenly Stem usually needs support from the Earthly Branches. If a stem is revealed without roots and without seasonal strength, it carries little force. The branches are the chart’s firm foundation; the stems show what becomes visible on the surface.

This means you can’t judge the strength of a Five Element by counting how many times it appears in the stems. One well-rooted stem may have far more strength than two unrooted stems.

A Chart with Strong Earth and Rootless Metal

Consider this combination: Ji (己), a yin-earth stem, over Wei (未), an earth branch; Geng (庚), a yang-metal stem, over Wu (午), a fire branch; Jia (甲), a yang-wood stem, over Xu (戌), an earth branch; and Xin (辛), a yin-metal stem, over another Wei.

The Jia wood Day Master is born in the Wu month, with a mass of fire and earth throughout the chart. If we ask whether the single revealed Ji earth is strong, the answer is clearly yes. The two Wei branches and Xu provide solid Earth roots, while Wu adds to the strong Fire-Earth momentum. Earth therefore occupies a powerful position in the chart, even though only one earth stem is revealed.

Geng metal and Xin metal are different. Two metal stems appear, so a quick count might make metal look stronger than Ji earth. But neither metal stem has a strong root in the Earthly Branches. Neither can withstand much pressure because both appear without roots. Despite having the greater number of visible stems, metal is far weaker than the single Ji earth.

What the Chart Needs

In this situation, the usual approach is to support and strengthen metal. At the Five Element level, the chart’s abundant fire over-controls metal. Geng and Xin are already unrooted, so this pressure leaves them even less able to stand.

Following this case’s stated approach, metal would benefit from taking root in the Earthly Branches. If metal is favorable in the full chart, those roots could help it withstand Wu fire. Any career outcome still depends on the chart’s overall balance.

This chart shows why visible quantity can mislead you. Ji earth appears only once, and Wu fire doesn’t appear in the Heavenly Stems at all. Yet Ji’s roots and the chart’s Fire-Earth support are strong, so it carries far more strength than the two metal stems revealed without roots.
